KENYA: The downside of male involvement in PMTCT
Involving men is increasingly being promoted as a key element in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, and while its benefits are well-documented - in one Kenyan study it reduced the risks of vertical transmission and infant mortality by more than 40 percent compared with no involvement - it can occasionally lead to domestic discord and even violence.

Children with HIV/AIDS Falling Through the Cracks of Treatment Scale-Up Efforts
Less than one-quarter (23%) of children with HIV/AIDS who need treatment are getting it, according to a report released by the World Health Organization (WHO) on the occasion of World AIDS Day (1 December 2011). Although treatment coverage for adults has been steadily climbing and has now reached approximately half of those in need, coverage for children is lagging far behind, highlighted the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi), a non-profit research and development organization that has recently launched a new paediatric HIV drug development programme.

Unparalleled global progress in HIV response
Global progress in both preventing and treating HIV emphasizes the benefits of sustaining investment in HIV/AIDS over the longer term. The latest report by the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF and UNAIDS indicates that increased access to HIV services resulted in a 15% reduction of new infections over the past decade and a 22% decline in AIDS-related deaths in the last five years.

A new report by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), released today shows that 2011 was a game changing year for the AIDS response with unprecedented progress in science, political leadership and results. The report also shows that new HIV infections and AIDS-related deaths have fallen to the lowest levels since the peak of the epidemic.

PATA Pan-African Forum 14-18 November 2011, Gaborone, Botswana
Paediatric AIDS Treatment for Africa (PATA) is an action network of treatment teams from 24 sub-Saharan countries promoting and facilitating quality of care for HIV/AIDS infected and affected children and their families through teamwork and sharing models of best practice. The forum themes for this year are: Early Infant Care, Adolescent Girls and Quality Improvement.

A survey of the Global Plan for ending vertical transmission of HIV
A Global Plan for ending vertical transmission of HIV and reducing maternal mortality among women living with HIV was launched in June. A survey runs to help provide civil society feedback as the plan is refined and implemented at global and national levels.

Use of hormonal contraceptives and risk of HIV-1 transmission: a prospective cohort study
Women should be counselled about potentially increased risk of HIV-1 acquisition and transmission with hormonal contraception, especially injectable methods, and about the importance of dual protection with condoms to decrease HIV-1 risk. Non-hormonal or low-dose hormonal contraceptive methods should be considered for women with or at-risk for HIV-1.
